Sometimes, you are lucky and sometimes you are not - I hear a commercial song coming on... sometimes you feel like a nut... My family was vacationing near Acadia National Park this summer. The day before I took this picture, I went to this place right before sunset. Of course, the place was swarming with photogs. I barely got a spot after politely asking one person to move out of the way for my shot - she was nice enough to move. As the sun was setting, the sky turned orange, but no dramatic clouds. Most people left by the time the sun went down (and the mosquitoes came out in force.) I just kept shooting. I was all alone by the time I realized that I should be going home. When I got home, a HORROR! I never changed my ISO setting back to 200. All pics were at 1600 ISO, and grainy for the most part. I was heart-broken. The next day, I was watching the sky in the late afternoon. I thought I'd give Bass Harbor another try, this time with the right ISO setting. However,it was overcast with no breaks in the clouds. It was one of those bad sky days. Oh, well... Still, I wanted to go and take my chance. There were only few people. As the sun was setting, still nothing note worthy, in terms of color, light etc. Within the next few minutes, the things started to happen - by this time, most people were gone, except one other zealous photographer. The clouds started breaking up. The sun peeked through the breaks. The red, orange, blue... The incredible color of what photogenic sunset should be became reality. This is a HDR version of three pics. This is one of my all time favorite.
